Teen among three held

for schoolgirl's murder

Up to press time, police in Berbice were trying to locate the whereabouts of two men from the Number 19 Warren area.

They say that the men may be able to provide information that would help solve the murder of 16-year old Roshni Partabsingh of Number 19 Warren.

Just after midday on Wednesday, police picked three suspects, one of whom is a 16-year-old. The other two are in their 20s. One of the suspects is from Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice. He was said to be in the area hours before the schoolgirl was killed.

The body of the Fifth Form, Berbice Educational Institute student was discovered with the throat slashed some time after 01:00hrs on Wednesday. The victim also appeared to have been raped.

It was customary for the teen to sleep over at her neighbour, 65-year-old Budnia, who lives about three doors away from the girl's parents. The woman and a physically challenged relative occupy the home since her relatives reside abroad.

Budnia, on Wednesday, told the Kaieteur News that she awakened to find a man standing over her. She said that since the place was in darkness, she could not recognise him.

He subsequently tied her up, beat her and took her to the lower flat where he left her with her handicapped relative.

Nothing was stolen during the assault, forcing the authorities to rule out robbery as a motive.

After the sexagenarian managed to free her feet, she made her way across the street to a neighbour who freed her. She then raised an alarm.

The girl's mother, Sunita Partabsingh, said that they were not aware of anything until they heard the neighbour shouting for them.

He told them that bandits were at Budnia's house. When villagers got themselves together and entered the home, no one strange was found. Instead the woman found her daughter lying face down.

Upon inspection she discovered that the girl was dead.

Roshni Partabsingh was the third of five children. The teen's life was cut short just as she was about to complete the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examination. Her last two subjects should have been written on June 12 and June 13.
