Detectives on the East Coast of Demerara are questioning a suspect who they feel could provide vital information on the criminal enterprise that is believed to have been operating out of the Buxton backlands.

The suspect, who is known as ‘Buck Ray' was held three days ago and has already been through several hours of interrogation.

A warrant had been issued for his arrest after he was charged with severely wounding another man two years ago.

A source told this newspaper that the man is an ex-soldier who had absconded from duty.

He is fingered in the murder of a Buxton man, Sherwin Dorsette, whose torso was fished out of the Buxton Sideline Dam canal two years ago.

According to the source, a caution statement given by another suspect had linked the ex-soldier to Dorsette's killing.

But because of the absence of the victim's head, detectives could not ascertain the cause of death and hence no charge could be instituted.

Another man who was with Dorsette when he was killed had managed to run away although he had been wounded.

The source said that that witness has since disappeared.

The source said that during interrogation, the ex-soldier has so far only revealed information on gunmen who have already been killed.

“He is not saying anything about those that are alive,” the source said.

Up to yesterday the suspect was still in custody.

This is the first significant arrest made so far since the Joint Services relocated to the village that has been described as a haven for criminals.
