SHUT DOWN: National Bakery at Camp Street and North Road, Georgetown.

NATIONAL Bakery, located at Camp Street and North Road in Georgetown, was yesterday ordered by the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) to close its doors.

The directive was issued after the municipality’s Chief Meat and Food Inspector, Mr Kenneth Stephens, visited the premises and deemed it unfit to carry on baking.

An official at City Hall told the Guyana Chronicle that the order was given a week before the inspection yesterday.

He said Stephens described the surroundings as unhealthy and said utensils in the bakery were dirty and contained visible rodents.

The premises would have to be cleaned up before operations can resume, according to the official.
