Former prime minister Basdeo Panday arrived at the Maximum Security Prison, Golden Grove, around 3 p.m. yesterday.

After he was processed and given his inmate uniform, a blue suit, Panday was examined by the prison medic.

The Express understands that Panday spent last night at the infirmary following a decision not to house him in the block where high security prisoners are kept.

Imam Yasin Abu Bakr who is facing sedition charges and accused kidnapper Selwyn Alexis are being kept in that block.

The decision to keep Panday at the infirmary was based on his health and personal security, prison sources said.

Panday's wife Oma Panday, two of his daughters and his attorney visited him yesterday.

The Express was told that Panday will be granted the special treatment that is afforded to all high security prisoners.

Panday will be treated as a convicted prisoner until he actually files an appeal.

When the appeal is filed his status will be changed to remand prisoner and he will no longer have to wear his jail uniform and not be known by his inmate number.
