THE Organisation of American States (OAS) yesterday joined in condemning the murder of acting Agriculture Minister Satyadeow Sawh and three others Saturday and called on local authorities to thoroughly investigate the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Guyana is a member of the hemispheric organisation which is among regional and international agencies and governments helping and closely monitoring the process towards general elections due later this year.

The OAS headquarters in Washington said Secretary General José Miguel Insulza, upon receiving news of the slaying of Mr. Sawh, issued the following statement:

“It is with regret and a deep sense of loss that we at the OAS learned of the slaying of the Honourable Satyadeow Sawh, Minister of Agriculture of Guyana, members of his family and security guard on Saturday, April 22.

“On behalf of the OAS, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Minister Sawh and other victims of the attack, and to the government and people of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana over the loss of this dedicated servant of the nation and others in his company. The OAS further wishes a full and speedy recovery to the injured survivors.

“The OAS strongly condemns this heinous act and calls on the appropriate authorities to engage in an immediate and thorough investigation to identify, apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators of this crime to the maximum extent under the law.”
