Two patients die during power failure at ICU

Two patients on life support machines died yesterday in the Georgetown Public Hospital 's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) during two power outages at the institution.

Kaieteur News understands that the patients succumbed after the hospital's generators failed to kick in when the power went out.

Sources identified one of the patients as Esme Belle, 57, from Campbellville. Belle was reportedly transferred from the High Dependency Unit to the ICU on Wednesday night.

The sources said that the other victim was a girl, aged about eight.

According to hospital sources, the first power outage occurred at around 11:10 hrs, and lasted about 45 minutes.

The other occurred at around 13:35 hrs and lasted for about 20 minutes.

Both power outages occurred in the Accident and Emergency Unit (ICU), and affected the Main Operation Theatre, the X-ray Department and the Laboratory.

Kaieteur News understands that one doctor performed a Caesarian section during the blackout, but other surgeries had to be postponed.
